Arm pocket tut

Quilted Arm/Wrist Cuff tutorial

Step one: Design your cuff. Write and/or draw out your ideas
Ask yourself some questions like:
How big is it going to be?
Do I want a pocket? If so what will it hold? How will it stay in the pocket?
How will I keep it on my arm?
What colors? What color stitching?
These answers are not concrete you can change as you go and sometimes you have too.

Step two: Measure your arm.
One measure at the starting point like wrist for my pattern
How tall
And around your end point.
Measure what you want to go in you pocket
Add any overlap and ease.

Step three: pattern Making
Take your measurements and draw out your pattern

Step four: fabric hunting
The sport of fabric hunting is a fun activity but it can be dangerous. Remember to wear neon orange so other fabric hunters can see you.
Fabrics can be hunted any were old cloths, old linens, fabric stores, and you can even tame some yarn to make your own.
You can further domesticate your fabrics by dyeing, bleaching and/or painting on them.

Step five: Creating the top layer and pocket
This can be a piece of patchwork fabric like mine or it can be appliquéd, a whole piece of cloth or manipulated fabric like pleating. What ever it is up to you. Make sure your piece is at lest a couple inches bigger than your pattern.

Step six: Making a batting sandwich
Top layer right side facing up
Batting (I like cotton batting) Make sure your piece is at lest a couple inches bigger than your top.
Lining right side facing down. This needs to be about the same size as the batting
Pin in several places
If you want to sew over top bits of yarns, gauzes, lace, wool roving place a bit of water soluble stabilizer on top.

Step seven: Quilting
I like to do free motion quilting on the machine. A darning foot with feeddogs down is the best suited for this but a regular foot with the press low has worked for me. I quilting needle for your machine will last longer than a universal.

Line and sew your pocket, quilt if your want
If you are going to wash your band wash it now.
If you want it to look like and old textured quilt do not pre wash your fabrics and batting
If you want a clean ironed look pre wash everything.

Step eight: cutting out your pattern and sewing on pocket or any other things
Pin your pattern on and chop, chop.
Add your pocket.
With the pocket that I have on mine it is not the best for my Ipod. I am thinking a pocket with a pleat or folded sides may be better. Mine will scrunch up a bit on my arm.

Step nine: bind the edge
If you have a square band the cut 2’’ strips on the straight of grain. If you do not cut your strips on the bias.
Fold them in half-length wise (hot dog style)
Iron in the fold
Pin it to around the edges with the raw edges on the edge of the quilt
At the join fold in the raw end of one and place the other inside the fold
Sew it with a ¼ seam

Fold it around to the back and hand stitch it using a whip or invisible stitch.

I am thinking of changing my bathroom to an art them. I might get a white fabric shower curtian and paint on it with fabric paint and put up some painting that i have downstairs.

But tomorrow I need to finish dyeing felt, weave, and construct painting suports maybe get to painting but that my not happen until sunday.

And I got stuff for my room ^^ oh yeah

and a very excited Kyla is priceless

I was going to get this as well but they were out of stock. Mom and I were talking about the fact that dad can make it super fast for cheaper. So I think it was meant for dad to make me a bunch of box shelves.

My room is slowly changing and getting cleaned out.
I have crap of the floor in my room but my closet is still a mess and i have a corner that is filled with bags of random stuff and crap. I filled Kelly's old room with books and paper work for reorganization.

This weekend will be work non stop to get weaving art pieces felted and finished. Also ready to display. *_* gah

Oh I bought the new Craft: magazine it is all about weaving. ^^ And I know one of the weavers who wrote an article she works and Heritage and Joan help edit it. Congrats! XD

Summer Dress and shall/ Poncho

There is nothing better than a cotton gauze dress in the summer!

The pattern is a mix of two that were altered a lot. . . The bodice was from an old dress pattern that I shortened and the skirt was a historical Edwardian skirt pattern from butterick that I shortened.
The shall/poncho was made with out a pattern. I copied a neck line from a shirt that I like and measured the rest.

The poncho looks best with jeans and a white tank underneath.
The serger and rolled hem were my best friends on these projects.

Over the Scarf

While my floor loom is broken I made a scarf on a frame loom with lumpy bumpy handspun yarn. It wove up faster than I thought it would. I warped the frame in a continuous loop of yarn that way when I wove I just pulled the fabric down so my arms could stay in the same spot. This would have worked better if I made a frame look with dowel and a tensioning device but I just used an old canvas stretcher frame with notched in it. The only thing that I had to do was even out my warp after I pulled it around the edge of the frame. It evened out after wet finishing. This scarf now lives at my friends (http://acrylicana.deviantart.com/) house. I made it for her birthday. ^^ Any way on to the pictures

Last week I made an awesome bread from http://meetmeatmikes.blogspot.com/2008/05/how-i-make-bread.html
way nummy and a bit messy to make. It makes three regular sized loaves.

This week I made a great soup from http://deliciouslivingmag.com/food/recipes/soups/kale-bean-sausage-soup/ it is way nummy and filling. I used fresh Italian pork sausage from an italian market with out fennel in it, i cut back on the fennel seed and i added some extra broth and pasta. When I make it again I am going to put the cabbage in with the potatoes, carrots and broth, also wait until the bitter end to put in the kale. I was suprized that even mom liked it.

Yesterday I bought some goji berries. I first herd of them was on law and order ci and then i started to see them around and in health food stores. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfberry The are good, something is very addictive about them. They have a familiar and yet distinct flavor almost berry and almost tomato and something generic savory. They are supposed to be super good for you too.

Drank a kombucha today and feeling good.

yesterday i was super crabby and pmsy. I hope I start and finish soon.
I am stressed at the moment with Kitty staying over until tuesday and being sick.

Today I found out that I got two scholarships! Yeah! It should cover fall and some of my winter semester. This is great, if I can get a job I my not have to get a loan.

I need new bedroom furniture; seriously I have had the same ugly ass furniture since the 2nd grade. The 2nd grade. I have a plan bed frame downstairs I can use, my side table that I need to refinish, a chair and stool.

I want to refinish it with a fun graphic paint. The piece is super retro and I think it would look sweet with some sort of design on it.
So I need two new dressers and I found a few at Ikea that I like a lot. I love the yellow one.

With a new dresser I would need to pick up some kind of mirror.

I am in dire need of a bookshelf as well.

Art, classes, and sick again

Friday was a good day.
Went to the ceramics studio and worked on somethings.
Got biblos for lunch.
Spent 3 hours at the DIA.
Then i went to the Fine art undergrad show opening and it is frinkin awesome this year!

Monday
I got my teeth drilled. . . not fun.
I bought myself chinese bakery and vitamins.
Lastly I went out for sushi.

Tuesday
I bought new sandals.

and then ceramics crit. I'll miss that class.

Weaving, Teaching, and Stuff

So I took the weaving class. It was money well spent! Soon I'll post pictures.
The instructor Suzanne Halvorson discussed color and working with chenille and bamboo yarns. I learned some new tricks and how to finish the two fibers. ^_^ yeah! I help the ladies who uncomfortable with color. Joan let me take the loom that I am renting home so I didn't have to drive up their everyday to get a few hours of weaving in. I come home and the loom is right there in the family room saying hey you work on me.
Anyway Suzanne Halvorson is a wonderful person and was a joy to work with. Her scarves are stunning, check them out http://www.bloomington.in.us/~byhand/shalvorson.html If I am ever in Bloomington IN I am stopping by.

My student teaching is almost finished next week is my last week. :( I'll miss the little buggers.
Here is some of their art. The plush is from 5th graders most who have never sewn before *_* they did an awesome job.
The paper sculptures are from 3rd graders.

I joined an art yarn fibers swap ^_^. Lots of fun. I for got to take a picture of what I sent off. I hope it is enough and she likes it.
I am awaiting feedback on an odd art job I found from etsy. I hope it shipped ok and she likes. Hum waiting sucks. Send me feedback people. Feedback. I love it.

I went to Heritage to find out about a special weaving class and it is $170 plus $20 for the loom rental plus cost of materials. . .
The price is on the cheaper side too.

The class sounds like fun and interesting.

Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6, 9 am - 4 p.m., two sessions. This class is about style and color. Suzanne will address issues of liturgical weaving, but focuses on strip weaving and interpreting it in today's fibers, including chenille and bamboo. your readers. Most students will not complete their scarf during the class. Materials can be purchased at class.

The instructor is a professor in IN too, not just some random person.

Snow day and Movie greatness

Today I watched Donnie Darko thanks to a snow day and comcast on demand.
Why did i not watch that movie sooner?
I was told that i would like it and i have to see it and that it's the shit! well it is all true. It is the shit and i love it!
Insanely delicious!
It makes me want to see Lost Highway, I tried watching it once but I was too ADD at the time.
I think I have a better appreciation for movies like these now then I would have a few years back.

I needed a day away from teaching the kids have been sucking out my energy and this snow day was a nice recharge.
the negative part of was my ceramics class was cut early last night and I left a mess on one of my pieces with glaze.
The inside glaze dripped all over the outside and it will not wash off. . . hum.
I was having one of those days.
When you wake up and say crap.
My tuesdays are normally tiring and but this week it was extra crazy.
It is all little things that add up too.

I'll feel better when I start my period.
Next week will be craziness too.

Tech-Seminar

So I am bored out of my decorative vegetable. It is required and I thought this would be a great time to update my blog.

So student teaching is going well. I was evaluated on a bad day (pms) so I learned a lot cried like a baby then put on my big girl pants and opened up to my students more . . . it was so much smoother. I will never be bubbly but I am just going to have to show my enthusiasm like I normally do with smiles and sarcasm. Even though the kids don't understand it but they do sense that I am excited about teaching them. So yeah. I also need to break down my lessons. Frankly, I will never be comfortable with the elementary age and with student teaching it is hard to create a true sense of comfort because it is not your class and to keep continuity you have to fallow the same daily routine and management plan.

I am stuck in a math-based seminar at the moment. There are no art-based seminars at all. This is quite pointless. I could be teaching right now and I have a great idea for Chinese New Year. Make your own pictogram language to sat Happy New Year or Good Luck. The medium would be ink and brush, using the same calligraphy techniques. It is Multi-cultural and interdisciplinary. And if I had really planed well I could being candy fruits and traditional Chinese new-year goodies. How sweet would that have been? Seriously? It would have been frickin' sweet!

I played with resin and it was fun. I want to make my own molds, I need to got to the Depot of the Home and get silicone calk (first I have to find my notes on which type it was).

For my next seminar I am making a bee line straight to the make your own podcast. Although Mary can help me too.

My ceramic piece is out of the kiln whole ^^ oh yeah! My next piece is going to be a goofy looking monster with holes for his eyes. Tee hee he can have flowers in his eyes. The piece I made before is very organic and looks similar to my soft sculptures. I am going to weave on it too ^^.

I need to finish my rug this weekend so I can take it to Urban and see how we are going to display it.

I have a slow leaking tire still . . . a month a go I went to belle tire and got it fixed. It is leaking again. I woke up to a low tire and a long drive in rush hour to Det. Blah! So, before I get to go and see my niece I have to go to belle tire and the health food store to get black bean patties (for Kelly and I) and a wheat grass shot. I hope my tire is still inflated to get to the belle tire on 14-mile off of 75.

Sheila Pepe

Wow, hearing Sheila Pepe talk about her art and her journey was completely invigorating along with seeing old art friends and professors. All I want to is make art and discuss my experience with my students. I am too excited to sleep, I feel like I have met my twin expect older, from a different home and a different sexual orientation. I love the composition and form of the modernist but also self-expression and the special change of installation art. It was so wonderful to hear that art dose not have an intention and I always felt that I was missing something or dumb because I make art to learn, heal and live. I also loved the fact that she did not explain her piece with normal bull that I have a feeling most artist talk about. It is up to the viewer to interoperate why should the artist preconceptions get in the way. When I first saw her the notices and postcards I thought it braids and noted string, in the lecture I was crocheting some random piece just to keep my hands busy and my mind focused. As she was talking and shoeing her pieces, my own crochet was getting lacier. I was really great to see instant inspiration translated into my art. My first semester of collage here at Wayne I wrote a theory of that Detroit has many parallels to New York when it became the world art center and that Detroit could easily become the next art hot bed. To hear that out of someone else’s mouth made me so happy because I have heard some many people “say keep dreaming” or giving this look of you nuts lady. At the moment I cannot express how she has influence my work and me. It is all fresh the information as to sit and ferment into something that I can express with worlds.

I started student teaching and the kids are great. Elementary is sill not my cup of tea but this week has been great.

I am finishing my BFA in fibers. When I told my fibers professor he was very excited. ^^ ha

Yarn- bulky thick and thin hand spun merino yarn or any bulky weight yarn
Note- choose a yarn that has memory, and is light, otherwise you tubes will drupe
Needles – US 10 ½ double point needles, and straights/ circulars and a size K crochet hook
Gauge- 3sts per inch or 9 w.p.i.
Notions- stitch markers, 2 stitch holders

Hat is made for a 22-inch head

Earflaps Make 2 Knit Flat Knit St st
Cast on 3sts
All odd rows knit straight
All even rows increase one alternating at the beginning or the end of the row
Row 2- make 1 (knit front and back) purl to the end
Row 3- knit
Row 4- purl 3, make 1
Increase until 10 stitches
Knit St st until the flap measures 5inches
Last row increase every 2 sts.

Ketchup and Mustard Monster Hat

I dyed, spun, designed and knitted this hat for one of my best friends. She loves yellow and red together and I thought that she needs a fun and funky hat for winter. I hope she likes it. When I was knitting it every thing just worked out it was nice. He hat was meant to be. I have to make small plush monster pins for it still.
The yarn I dyed and spun. It is called sunspots. About 9 wpi and I spun 4 oz, 240 yrds
It is merino, mohair, sparkle, sequins, and gold thread

The hat was knit flat (because I didn’t have DPN’s) on size 10 1/2 needles and a size K croquet hook. The tubes were knit in the round with 3 different sizes of needles because I didn’t have 10.5 double points. I don’t recommend this. I singled crocheted around all the edges and added the braids. It took about 160 yrds to make that hat.

I plan on posting the pattern for free once I refine it and type it out.

We split shrimp ones and i made my dad a pork one iwth out the sauce because he is allergic to one of the ingreaiates. But he loved anyway and told my Grandma all about it. Here are some pictures

I made my friend yarn in her favorite colors and then I am going to make her a funky hat out of it with on monster pin.

Other yarn was from the Tour de fleece and the weaving was an overshot sample that I made last durring the winter semester.

Today mom and I drove 3 hours to Feilds fabrics.
God i love that store, well priced quality fabrics. . . something joanns will never understand

I am painting my neice's nersery and the grey my sister picked out clashes with the drapery fabric.
oh dear god it clashes.
It is a very green grey which is hard to work with.
So I found a better grey but i don't know which one they want for their bathroom
I think i found a nice purple , blue and definatlly a good grey that goes with the fabric.
The grey i picked out is more of a nuteral grey
so yah

Saffron Risotto Onigiri

I have been looking at a lot of Bento Box lunches and recipes and I thought of my own. ^^

Saffron Risotto Onigiri
-Leftover Saffron Risotto
-Hard Salami, persechuto, or spinach (sea weed sub)
- Optional flavorings like Parmesan cheese, or olives

- Rice mold or cookie cutters

Mix in flavorings if want
Put some risotto in a mold or form it by hand
Warp with lunchmeat or spinach
Eat

Well I gave up on my camera hunt and found a good quality camera for a fair price.
I bought the Fuji Finepix S700. I like it fits in the hand nicely and I like the images I have gotten.

I made a lesson plan where students have to take a historical figure and make him in to an illustration and then put a witty phrase that reflects part of their life. It sounds like a fun thing to do to learn the basics in Illustrator. . . more interesting than drawing a piece of fruit.

My mini van back wheel holes have some rust issues so this weekend I decided to buy some enamel and cover that up. Of course I chose the weekend my dad is out of town. ^^ I bought rustoilum enamel and latex paint (that I thought was enamel*head slap*) My dad comes home and say did you use automotive paint? Ah . . . no. Then he asks if I patched up the hole form getting rid of the rust . . . ah I didn't it out. I just wire brushed it and knocked of the peeling paint, then painted over that. He said ok it might not last. Well yeh it won't because I have latex over oil based and mixed because I didn't read the label *head slaps twice* gah I know far better then that.

Working on a mixed media collage for my digital art class the first part is a digital collage then painted over with cut collage.
It is so nice to paint again.

Camera is still MIA. I need it now so I can show of my tricked van. It has a kitschy angel and devil theme. I feel like I need shag upholstery and carpeting in my van. That would be awesome.

I have been busy with printmaking Computers and tour de fleece
My printmaking professor I getting on my nerves he is the kind that is always looking over your shoulder. I prefer and work better when they leave me the heck alone and put some input in once and a while. I am very head strong when it comes to my art and art making. I think he is the same except he has to have people do things his way. I have a blister on my thumb from carving linoleum. I finished four in one day and printed one, and then a four-layer print.

Finished my first lesson plan in computers and a fun drawing on Photoshop. (I tried to make it a jpg. but ps froze.)

Spinning away made two skeins yesterday. Finished the brown roving yesterday. Today I will finish the surprise-roving mom got me for my birthday last year. Skein form the 9th tattered Pointe shoe

Fri and Sat Mary is having sewing and craft days I want to go Saturday and Friday but I have plans Friday for doc appointments and bead stores maybe Ikea and the nummy foods. I'm thinking mid eastern.

Deviant art is acting weird. I can't post new piece or watch new artists . . . . I am wondering if they put more restrictions for non-subscribers.

So I am posting two days of spinning for the Tour De Fleece

This was spun yesterday from BFL top dyed by Spunky Electric http://www.spunkyhats.com/accyarn.htm
It was plied with wooly nylon and beads.

Todays spinning is a shetland roving I bought a couple years ago at the Mt. Burce Fiber festival. It is very easy to spin. it is a 2-ply

I did some painting and linocuting today. I acually cut my thumb. I was being dumb about it though. Cutting linoleium in my lap. Not smart. I know better too. I think I need some new tools they seem slugish.

Well my camera fell once and the monitor is fucked up. Once. camera Once. I am hoping that a freshly charged battery will help. The pictures are coming out the same and good so no big issuses.

Tour De Fleece starts to day ^^ so spinning fun

Yesterday I wove and felted. Note to self: do not weave when on pain meds. On Thursday, I had my wisdom teeth removed.
At the moment the prawn on my loom is worn down just enough to be a major pain. I need to order a new one or find a better solution. I have an eye screw and a set of chop sticks helping hold the tension.

I started my printmaking and computer graphics classes. I have to work on homework this weekend. A lesson plain and some mini monoprints and linocuting.

First, my weaving mmm

I plied it with wooly nylon and beads. I call it seasoned dreads.

Third, is a spindle spun mixture of alpaca, wool, silk, sequence and fake leaves. I also hand carded and dyed the fibers. It is called hills of Ireland

Yesterday I finished weaving my rug, ^^ I am a happy Kyla. I have been working on it religiously since March/April. Well it is off the loom I have to needle in the ends, close gabs; wash and block . . . maybe even add some beading. ^_____^ I will take a picture of it soon and post it . . . everywhere. Yesterday, I felt like trying to my back like a cape and running around. One day I had a fantastic installation idea, were the wall is painted and their are parts of the painting woven like patches and then the woven pieces would hang over the wall's edges onto the floor and ceiling. I think stuffing some of these weaving for extra dimension may be interesting too.

Well I think I will get out of bed and do some spinning.
On that note I may join the tour de fleece this year.
